Demetrios is a funny adventure game that could take you around twelve hours or less to complete depending how you play. The French developer COWCAT which is a one-man team by Breton Fabrice made this game himself besides the additional translation and music for his first video game release. He was inspired by the classic adventure games like the Broken Sword series and more. I have never played that series but have played other classic adventure games. This passion project was released on May 16, 2016 in PC first and more devices after. Now it is available on all systems now with this Nintendo Switch release.
Bjorn Thonen, is the main protagonist. He is a bit of a rude and thoughtless character. The word out of his mouth during the adventure will put a smile on your face or have you laugh out loud. It will be it hit or miss depending if you enjoy the silly and crude humors. He owns an antique shop and lives in Paris. The adventure starts after he is robbed one night after coming home drunk. Now interested into why the thief stole the tablet from his new statue he bought. He starts his own investigation with the help of his new neighbor Sandra.
I was entertain and hooked into wanting to know the next story bit provided in comic form. Throughout the adventure Bjorn will visit new locations to explore and investigate. Solve puzzles too and meeting new people as well with interesting dialogue. There are mini-games to take a break from the investigation in the Carnival fair. If you don’t enjoy the humor the story from start to finish provide a great time and a great ending to the Bjorn’s adventure.
Gameplay is point and click adventure game. The left stick moves the cursor to select stuff and the right stick is slow moving cursor to use to do a close-up zoom to investigate items. The close-up zoom is used to find cookies as well and Easter egg references too. There are three cookies in every scene. It was fun like finding Waldo. Collecting these will provide you hints after eating one and funny dialogue too in case you get stuck on what to do next. There are mini-games in the carnival that are simple touch control on handheld mode and controller buttons on TV mode makes them more challenging than in handheld mode.
If you love point and click adventure genre. Then this is a great indie gem adventure to play on the go or at home to help Bjorn on his adventure. You could see the passion put into this project. The story was fun from beginning to end. Amount of dialogue in the game was cool to read with most of them interesting. There are variety of lines per character to speak to after talking to them once to get more responses. Choices made in the game will have consequences to Bjorn that could lead him to his death. There are variety of death scenarios to unlock for Bjorn that provides a funny dialogue of how he died that were fun to earn. In-game achievements to get and mini-games to play to take a short break. Try it out thanks to a free demo available in the eShop.
